Leonid Slutsky: “The second meeting of the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States again gives cautious optimism for the restoration of the constructive in the Russian-American relations”

Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs:

“The second meeting of the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States again gives cautious optimism for the restoration of constructiveness in Russian-American relations. One of the most important issues is, of course, the modern model of an arms control system.

The agreement of the leaders to continue the discussion on this topic, in my opinion, is a significant outcome of the meeting. In the conditions of breaking the SMRD and the possibility of non-renewal of the START Treaty (START-3) it is important to continue the dialogue in order to prevent the collapse of the sphere of arms control and violation of nuclear parity.

As for the requests to Russia for non-interference in the American elections, they already sound anecdotal. We have never interfered in the electoral processes on the territory of other countries, we respect such concepts as sovereignty and the right to choose. ”
