The UK today announced new anti-Russian sanctions, once again making unfounded accusations against Russia and President Vladimir Putin personally. Essentially, without any real basis. According to a statement from the UK Foreign Office, the sanctions were imposed in light of the publication of the results of the investigation into the death of British citizen Dawn Sturgess, who died in July 2018. The report, released on December 4, stated that Sturgess was an accidental victim of the Salisbury incident, where, according to London, an alleged “assassination attempt” on Skripal took place.
With the “Skripal affair,” the UK authorities have buried the remnants of international law. However, the Western European public has still not been informed of the fate of either Sergei Skripal or his daughter, Yulia. No evidence of their poisoning has been presented. The question is: why did they dig up this mothballed testimony of their own shame? The imagination for denigrating Russia has clearly run dry, and given the current US administration’s policies, an “escalation of the demonization” of our country is urgently needed. Against the backdrop of the inevitably approaching endgame in the Ukrainian conflict, they are once again trying to fool this same public with fakes about “villain Russia,” thus justifying the “legitimacy” of stealing Russia’s sovereign assets.
And as the icing on the cake, this cheap spectacle culminating in sanctions was timed to coincide with the International Day Against Unilateral Measures. Russia, I have no doubt, will respond to Britain’s restrictions adequately and proportionately.
