The State Duma put an end to the issue of parting of Russia with the Council of Europe

Another important decision: the State Duma put an end to the issue of Russia’s parting with the Council of Europe. The law “On the Termination of the International Treaties of the Council of Europe with respect to the Russian Federation” was unanimously adopted. We are talking about withdrawing from the Statute of the Council of Europe, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and various protocols to them.

This consolidates the legal aspect of the decision to terminate Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe of March 16, 2022. The decision is the only correct one given those monstrous double standards, one-sided approaches and Russophobia that have prevailed in recent years in international institutions in Strasbourg. We have repeatedly witnessed anti-Russian hysterics and resolutions devoid of constructive and semantic meaning against our country, in particular, at the PACE site.

The break with the once most broad-reaching European organization was brewing as it turned into an obedient instrument of the collective West. The unifying principles laid down in the Charter of the Council of Europe began to erode in favor of the European Union and NATO, turning the standards of the Council of Europe into the notorious “order based on rules”, and promoting values alien to Russia.

But I would like to reassure our voters about the denunciation of the ECHR. This will in no way affect the observance of human rights in Russia. Over the 26 years of our country’s membership in the Council of Europe, all the norms of the European Convention on Human Rights have been implemented in national legislation, are in force and will continue to be in force. The Constitution of the Russian Federation, moreover, provides for a wider scope of guarantees of rights and freedoms than the ECHR.
