Leonid Slutsky: “The situation with migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border is heating up and threatens to escalate into a humanitarian crisis, especially against the background of“ hostilities ”on the part of Poland’s border guards.

Warsaw, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov aptly put it, is literally outrageous, using water cannons and tear gas against women and children. The European Union, in its usual way, “uncovered” double standards, frankly ignoring such actions by Poland and continuing to threaten to toughen sanctions against Minsk. And, of course, all this is happening with the support of Big Brother: Washington has already promised to introduce another sanctions package against Belarus in coordination with the EU with the wording for “continuing attacks on democracy”.

There is a kind of deja vu. In the fall of 2018, Washington sent several thousand troops to the border with Mexico to contain immigrants from Central America. The media then reported that American border guards were separating children from their parents and keeping them in cages. They did not receive food or basic necessities. Where are the sanctions for “attacks” on basic human rights? And what about the condemnation of the world community? Or is it “different” again?

At the same time, Belarus, despite threats and accusations, continues to make real efforts to prevent a humanitarian crisis. President Lukashenko has already instructed the governor of the Grodno region to prepare a logistics center for receiving migrants. Minsk demonstrates its full readiness to participate in solving the problem, which was provoked by its Western critics with their irrepressible geopolitical ambitions and the continuation of colonial campaigns in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

Isn’t it time for the EU to open its eyes, stop throwing smoke bombs and actually get involved in the search for a constructive way out? “
