Having promised America a “golden age”, rivers of oil and the conquest of Mars, he did not mention Russia or Ukraine even once in his inauguration speech.
Trump’s return to the White House was associated with the emergence of a “window of opportunity” on the Ukrainian track. The 47th US President speaks of his desire to become a “peacemaker” and “unifier”. But on what terms is the main question.
Moscow, as Russian leader Vladimir Putin confirmed today, is open to dialogue with the new American administration on the issue of Ukraine. But openness does not mean a willingness to make concessions. Everything will depend on how this dialogue goes. We have learned the lessons of the Minsk agreements well, sustainable peace, guarantees of equal and indivisible security, and a systematic elimination of the root causes of the conflict are important to us. And that means a non-nuclear, non-aligned and denazified Ukraine.
Washington had previously announced its readiness to make contact, Donald Trump’s intention to hold a telephone conversation and then a meeting with Vladimir Putin. And this is a positive signal. But as for Russian-American relations in general, it is unlikely to be easy. Biden leaves an extremely difficult legacy here – literally ruins. And restoration (if there is a will to do so) could take decades. Trump, of course, demonstrates a more reasonable approach at least by recognizing the obvious: the existence of only two genders on Earth – male and female. But how reasonable his other policies will be, we will see. And regardless of the “American choice”, Russia, strong and independent, will continue to defend national interests and protect its sovereignty.
