Leonid Slutsky: “A joint statement by the presidents of Russia and the United States should sober up the adherents of historical lies”

Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Leonid Slutsky:

“A joint statement by Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe should sober up the adherents of historical lies. The public recognition and reminder of the military merits of both American and, above all, Soviet soldiers in the defeat of Nazi Germany is of serious importance against the backdrop of repeated attempts to rewrite the history of World War II in the West. I hope that the statement will be appreciated and heard in European capitals, where today a war is being waged at the state level with monuments to soldiers-liberators, and in the history textbooks the role of the USSR in the victory over fascism is artificially drawn out.

The joint statement of the two presidents also gives hope that the “Spirit of Elba” can still be restored in Russian-American relations as a symbol of a common approach to modern challenges and threats. These are, first of all, the issues of combating the pandemic and strategic stability and security on the planet.”
