Leonid Slutsky: “In the ‘civilized West’, everyone is looking for any pretexts to plunder Russian assets”

At first they demanded that they be transferred to Ukraine, now the Minister of Justice of Latvia and the leader of the New Conservative Party, Janis Bordans, “hurried up” with an “old song” about compensating for some damage from the “Soviet occupation”.

According to him, Latvian society has been waiting for “historical justice” for more than 80 years, and the Soviet Union is to blame for the country’s current backwardness…

In a decent society, such “historical justice” is called robbery and lawlessness. The irony lies in the fact that the proposal to literally “on the sly” to take over other people’s money comes from the Minister of Justice, who should, in fact, guarantee the implementation of the law. But it is unwritten for Russophobes – they are able to come up with an excuse for any baseness towards Russia.

Minister Bordans would do well to seek legal advice from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who admitted that the expropriation of the frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia is currently not legal from the point of view of the norms of both the United States and a number of other countries.

And it is especially interesting how the damage from the “Soviet occupation” will be assessed in Riga? Will residential buildings, infrastructure, factories built under the USSR be taken into account? And also the lives of Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Latvia from the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War? Unlikely. The memory of the current Latvian authorities, like the legal system, is very selective.

But we don’t suffer from amnesia. And we will also find what to present in response.
