Leonid Slutsky: Liz Truss becomes Prime Minister of Great Britain

The first thing she promised to do in her new post was to call Zelensky. As part of her election campaign, Truss actively advocated unconditional support for Kyiv and opposed the solution of the conflict through negotiations with Moscow, as well as the continued supply of weapons to the neo-Nazi regime.

Russophobia to the “last Ukrainian” – obviously, this is what will continue to characterize the style and policy of the British cabinet. Here, continuity is guaranteed.

Apparently, Liz Truss (like her recent counterpart, German Foreign Minister Burbock) does not have her own citizens in the first place. The new prime minister will most likely have to tell them to turn off the lights. Electricity and heating bills continue to hit the ceiling in the UK. And it is not Russia and its President who are to blame here, but the thoughtless sanctions policy of Downing Street. Not surprising at the same time, the results of public opinion polls published by YouGov. 35% of the British polled believe that Truss will become a “terrible” prime minister, the worst since the days of Margaret Thatcher (except perhaps on a par with Johnson) – this is the most popular answer. 10% of respondents expect a good premiership from her, and only 2% expect an excellent premiership.

Of course, who will be the new prime minister is an internal affair of Great Britain. More people ask me about the possibility of changes in the Russian-British dialogue. Forecasts are consistently negative. Bilateral relations are now at such a low level that they can hardly be worse. But still I hope that now Liz Truss will not challenge the sovereignty of Russia over the Rostov and Voronezh regions. This will be progress, her personal progress.
