Leonid Slutsky: “Negotiations between the heads of the foreign affairs agencies of the Russian Federation and the United States have almost just ended in Geneva. They were, according to the statements of the parties, “intermediate in nature”, but again they were accompanied by the repetition of American mantras about the “invasion” of Russian troops into Ukraine and another (which already counted?) assurances by Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov about the absence of such plans in principle. Is there any progress? The question is rhetorical.

A written response to each point of the Russian proposals for security guarantees has not yet been submitted. Washington is taking another week-long time-out, reassuring its commitment to “the path of diplomacy and dialogue.” We will wait…
At the same time, statements on Capitol Hill were not the best background for Geneva. Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi called the bills on sanctions against Russia, including the country’s leadership, and support for Ukraine one of the priorities for congressmen. That is, American parliamentarians are still ready to work to cover up Kiev’s sabotage of the implementation of the Minsk agreements, while approving the supply of weapons to the current Ukrainian regime under fairy tales and myths about “Russian aggression.”

Meanwhile, February 12 marks the 7th anniversary of the signing of Minsk-2. There is still no alternative to it. Maybe we should reconsider our priorities and focus our efforts on supporting the settlement process and facilitating the implementation of previously concluded agreements? The question is also rhetorical. The United States does not need peace in Ukraine, they obviously need a foothold to contain Russia.”
