Leonid Slutsky: “The Congress of the Conservative People’s Party of Estonia on Sunday approved the former speaker of the country’s parliament, Henn Põlluaas, as the official presidential candidate. The same Põlluaas, who regularly puts forward territorial claims against Russia, continuing to be delusional about the validity of the Tartu peace treaty. to bypass them in his speech at the congress, where again there were passages about the alleged “annexation” and “occupation of Pechora and the territories beyond Narva.”

Henn Põlluaas’s statements could be called ordinary pre-election rhetoric, counting on not very literate voters in terms of jurisprudence and history. However, the broadcast of such a position is increasingly postponing the ratification of the Russian-Estonian border agreement.

Thus, Mr. Põlluaas is again stepping on the same rake and setting the situation back 16 years, when, after almost 11 years of negotiations, it was possible to agree on a border line and sign a border treaty. But it was the mention from the Estonian side in its preamble to the Treaty of Tartu that then forced Russia to withdraw its signature, and new consultations resumed only in 2012 and ended in 2014 with the signing of a new agreement on the state border. The document is still under consideration in the parliaments of both countries, in the Russian State Duma – in the International Affairs Committee. There were agreements on its simultaneous ratification, but it was the Russophobic line of Estonian politicians that slowed down the whole process.

For a historical educational program: the Treaty of Tartu was concluded between the RSFSR and Estonia on February 2, 1920, it provided that Ivangorod and part of the Pechora region belonged to the Baltic republic, but after its entry into the USSR in 1940, these territories were ceded to the RSFSR. Point.

It remains to be regretted that Estonian politicians are not worried about the fact that the border with Russia is still not legally fixed, it is more convenient for them to keep it “hostage”, declaring about “criminal occupation” to attract the electorate.

There can be no talk of any transfer of territories to Estonia, it is not discussed and cannot be discussed. Read the new version of the Constitution of Russia.
