Leonid Slutskiy: “The Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported that Brussels is considering the possibility of creating an EU military training mission in Ukraine. This, as the newspaper writes, at the end of July asked the Ukrainian ministers of foreign affairs and defense in a “confidential” letter addressed to the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell. The European Commission, in turn, said that the EU is discussing various measures to support Ukraine.

But, if it comes to the creation of some kind of EU military training mission in Ukraine, there will be many questions. Who will the European instructors “teach” against and who will be their “students”? Under the guise of mythical “Russian aggression”, Ukraine can thus be turned into a testing ground for new military provocations against Russia, to the delight of Russophobes of all stripes. But these goals and objectives have nothing to do with the prosperity of the Ukrainian people.

If Europe really worried about the security of Ukraine, then European officials should pay attention to the ongoing conflict in Donbass and Kiev’s sabotage of the Minsk agreements. In Donetsk and Lugansk, women, old people and children continue to die from bullets and shells of the Ukrainian regime, but in Brussels they continue to turn a blind eye to this and invent threats allegedly emanating from Russia.

At the same time, Western partners should not forget that Russia, as a sovereign state, has the right to conduct exercises on its own territory to maintain the combat readiness of the army. Moscow does not violate international obligations here. Any attempts to justify the deployment of military missions in states adjacent to the Russian Federation by this will be far-fetched. It would be better to direct all forces towards peaceful purposes, for example, to facilitate the implementation of the Minsk agreements by Kiev, and not to push the Ukrainian authorities again to escalate the conflict in the southeast. “
