Leonid Slutsky: “The suspension of the activities of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to NATO and the Information Bureau and the Alliance’s Military Liaison Mission in Moscow is more than an adequate response to the expulsion of Russian diplomats”

Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky:

“The suspension of the activities of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to NATO, as well as the termination of the activities of the Information Bureau and the Alliance’s Military Liaison Mission in Moscow are more than an adequate response to the unjustified expulsion of eight Russian diplomats from Brussels.

The alliance has taken an openly confrontational position in relation to the Russian Federation. All statements by the NATO leadership about the need for a dialogue with Russia were clearly at odds with deeds. I fully agree with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov – under such circumstances, we can no longer pretend that there are any prospects for positive changes in relations with NATO in the near future.

The collective West has made a lot of efforts in recent years to curtail contacts, not to mention the incessant provocations along the Russian borders. We were ready for a dialogue, but such a dialogue is possible only on an equal basis, and not from a position of strength. “
