Leonid Slutsky: The United States has turned the sanctions mechanism not only into a tool of dictatorship in the external arena, but also into a means of internal political clashes

Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky:

“The United States has turned the sanctions mechanism not only into a dictatorship tool on the external stage, but also into a means of internal political showdowns. Restrictions against Turkey are a vivid example. It was worth criticizing Trump’s actions in Syria in Congress with concurrent accusations of” reassuring “Erdogan as the US president signs a decree imposing sanctions against Ankara.
Partly because of this, partly due to the position of Turkey, I personally have big doubts that US sanctions will achieve the stated goal and will be able to influence the operation “Source of Peace” in Syria. Sanctions generally rarely work in the political direction. Rather, they serve as an additional element of Washington’s influence in unfair competition.
As for the Syrian settlement, it is important here to continue the path of dialogue, carrying out the constitutional processes that have begun, in compliance with international law, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. “
