Leonid Slutsky: “Today marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Belovezhskaya agreements, which laid the foundation for the termination of the existence of the USSR”

Leonid Slutsky: “Today marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Belovezhskaya agreements, which laid the foundation for the end of the existence of the USSR. But the strength and power of that great country still does not allow Western politicians to sleep peacefully. So, on the eve of this date, US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland, well known for distributing cookies on the Ukrainian Maidan in 2014, announced Washington’s concern over the fact that Russia is allegedly seeking to recreate the Soviet Union.

Obviously, the United States continues to experience the “phantom pains” of the Cold War, looking out for the “specter of communism” in Europe, and cannot accept the reality of a multipolar world without the rule of one hegemon. It is precisely on revenge to establish dominance that US foreign policy has been directed in recent years. Hence, apparently, Moscow’s striving to restore the USSR appears in the alarming consciousness.

Victoria Nuland spoke in the spirit of Hillary Clinton, who back in 2013 promised not to allow “re-Sovietization” in response to steps to build the EAEU. But at the same time, both, trying to give a negative political coloring to the integration processes in the post-Soviet space, did not take into account the diversity of today’s world. Cooperation within the CIS, the Eurasian Economic Union and a number of other structures, for example, the BRICS and the SCO, where Russia takes part, is built exclusively on an equal and mutually beneficial basis, and not against someone.

And what about our western partners? For all these 30 years, we have consistently observed NATO expansion and its rapid approach to our borders in violation of all previous agreements, the convening of various “summits of democracies” for the “right” countries and interference (including military) in the affairs of sovereign states. Therefore, let American officials call everything by their proper names – Washington is very concerned about the strengthening of the position of Russia, which opposes the unipolar world, and the expansion of our ties with other countries.

But to preserve the “spirit of Geneva”, which was announced during yesterday’s conversation between the presidents of Russia and the United States, it is necessary to move forward and not return to the past. Russia is interested in stable and understandable relations with the United States, and not in the “reincarnation” of the bloc confrontation. “
