The German Chancellor is only raising the stakes in the Ukrainian conflict by repeating mantras about the “threat” from Russia.
Hence the leaks that the German government will not endorse Gerhard Schröder’s candidacy in possible negotiations with Russia, the rabid support for neo-Nazis in Ukraine, elevated to the level of a “strategic partnership,” and the goals of militarization and the creation of “the strongest army in Europe.” Rather, Germany is claiming to regain its status as the main threat to European security. The historical parallels in Merz’s rhetoric are simply phosphorescent.
At the same time, the German Chancellor has the audacity to display his dictatorial tendencies and threaten Slovak Prime Minister Fico with a “serious conversation” for his visit to Moscow for Victory Day and meeting with the Russian President. Merz, like Zelenskyy, does not want peace in Ukraine. It is they who remain an obstacle to ending the conflict due to their own selfish interests. To maintain their own power, the likes of Macron and Merz are prepared to make all of Europe one big target.
Meanwhile, it’s worth reminding EU politicians that it was Vladimir Putin who put forward the initiative to shape new contours of Eurasian security. And the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict should be the beginning of recovery, not the end of peace on the European continent.
