Russia took over the BRICS presidency on January 1

I am sure this will be one of the brightest and most interesting periods since the foundation of the organization in 2006. The number of participants doubles: Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa are joined by Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Ethiopia.

Argentina should have been included in this list, but the new president, Javier Miley, took the country “to the side” with a course of libertarian reforms. However, even without Buenos Aires, the positions of BRICS are strengthened many times compared to the G7. Western media and politicians no longer make jokes about “crumbling bricks” (brics in English bricks). They are simply shocked: it is obvious that all attempts to discredit the multipolar model of international cooperation have failed.

In less than 20 years, the BRICS community has gained global influence. The basis of the association is equality and respect for the national interests of each of its participants. It is no coincidence that the motto of the year of the Russian presidency, as Vladimir Putin said, will be: “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security.”

Among the priorities is the promotion of interaction in the field of science, high technology, healthcare, ecology, as well as in the field of culture, sports, youth exchanges and through the civil community. Together with its BRICS partners, Moscow advocates cooperation in the field of renewable energy and nuclear energy, as well as the development of trade and investment ties, ensuring financial stability, including through the transition to mutual payments in national currencies. In the near future, I hope we will see the introduction of a common unit of account.

We expect increased inter-parliamentary interaction between the participating countries. BRICS deserves the creation of a full-fledged parliamentary dimension.

The development of BRICS draws another line under attempts to establish Western hegemony with the dictates of the dollar and takes multipolarity to new horizons.
