The State Duma unanimously adopted in the first reading the bill on deratification of the CTBT

The State Duma unanimously adopted in the first reading the bill on de-ratification of the CTBT.

The decision is aimed at restoring parity and mirror symmetry in relation to the United States of America, which has not ratified it since the signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1996.

Thus, the process of recalling the instrument of ratification under the CTBT by the Russian side is launched. But this does not mean that Russia is going to withdraw from the Treaty or suspend its operation. We will continue to fulfill our obligations, including maintaining a moratorium on nuclear testing.

The adoption of the bill is fully consistent with Russia’s national security interests, as well as the goals of ensuring fairness and balance with the United States in the field of nuclear arms control.
