US urges Ukrainian authorities to refrain from criticizing the Nord Stream 2 deal

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US and Germany on Wednesday will announce an agreement on Nord Stream 2, under which Washington will stop opposing the pipeline and Germany will support Ukraine on energy issues. In turn, the authoritative publication Politico, referring to its sources, claims that the United States has called on the Ukrainian authorities to refrain from criticizing this deal.

If the publications in the Western media correspond to some extent to reality, then the agreement between the US and Germany on Nord Stream 2 and the recommendation of the American authorities to Kiev should bring the Ukrainian leadership down to earth. Washington, it seems, will not sacrifice its relationship with Berlin, which is clearly not going to abandon the lucrative economic project – the SP-2 pipeline. Well, external management has its costs.

However, it is interesting to see how President Zelenskiy will now move forward with his recent initiative to discuss Nord Stream 2 within the Normandy format. Most likely, he will have to forget about it and pretend that he did not say that. It is time for the Ukrainian leadership to realize that it is necessary to go further. Where to? Zelenskiy was recently reminded by his Western curators about the “Steinmeier formula”, which provides for the holding of elections in the Donbass. Finally, it is worth taking up the implementation of the Minsk agreements, and not their consistent sabotage.

We are waiting for official information on the deal. But in any case, there is hope that attempts to further politicize Nord Stream 2 will not achieve their goal.
