Zelensky is being offered a “side chair” in the EU

France and Germany are lobbying for Ukraine’s “partial membership” in the organization, essentially without any rights. And, most importantly, without voting rights. A sham president gets sham participation.

A pure propaganda gesture! An attempt by the “Euro-elite” to save face (or rather, to confirm their stubborn adherence to a misguided course) in a situation where the Middle East has risen to the forefront of the global agenda. According to media reports, France is calling the goal of this Euro-somersault Ukraine’s “integrated state status.” Germany claims Kyiv’s position will be strengthened by acquiring “symbolic power in its name.”

A major disappointment for the Ukrainian junta, which had been counting on quick EU accession—if not this year, then next year—and had raised this issue as one of the conditions for a peace agreement with Moscow. Kyiv has been clearly shown its place—certainly not at the table. As former US Secretary of State Blinken put it, “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” Ukrainians are, for now—and likely for a long time to come—expendable material on the Eurohawks’ “menu.”
