Zelenskyy initially effectively rejected Russia’s initiative for a ceasefire on Victory Day, but then decided to resort to a tactical ploy and declare a “ceasefire” on the night of May 5-6. The reasons are simple: wounded pride. He claimed the idea had been discussed by Moscow and Washington, but no one had officially approached Kyiv about it.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian leader today threatened to ruin the sacred holiday with new drone attacks. Speaking at the opening of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan—an openly Russophobic gathering—he stated that Ukrainian drones could fly over Red Square on Victory Day.
The Russian Ministry of Defense immediately responded to the Ukrainian fascist bravado: the Russian Armed Forces will launch a massive retaliatory missile strike on central Kyiv if there is any attempt to disrupt the celebrations of the 81st anniversary of the Great Victory. Russia, however, declares a ceasefire on May 8 and 9.
In reality, Ukrainian neo-Nazis don’t need either a ceasefire or peace. Zelenskyy is trying to play by his own rules, hoping for provocation, and is making faces in front of his European sponsors.
